Your Brain on Weight Loss
One of the things that makes Real Healthy Habits different than anything you've ever done before is that we talk about how to get your brain on board when it comes to weight loss. A lot of other programs, they just ignore this part.
So what does that mean? That means we’ve got to learn how your brain actually works. There are two different systems or ways of thinking in your brain. They're called system one and system two by neuroscientists. I call them the Boss and the Assistant.
The Boss Brain
The Boss part of your brain is the part of the brain that we always think of as your brain. This is the thinking part, the cognitive part, of your brain. It’s the conscious part of the brain, so it’s the part that you're actually aware of. It's in charge of willpower, motivation, goals, keeping you on track, long-term thinking, and long-term planning. And using that part of your brain is what diets typically want you to do.
The problem with this part of your brain, is it's only responsible for 5% of your brain's activity. It can't multitask. It can only do one thing at a time. It's not super strong, but it’s higher level thinking. it thinks it's in charge, so it's the boss.
The other part of your brain is what I like to call The Assistant. You ask any boss how she gets things done, and she's going to point to her assistant.
The assistant is in charge of 95% of your brain's activity. But, the problem with this part of your brain is it's the subconscious. It's the habit part of your brain—the system part of your brain.
You're not really sure what's going on there because it's the subconscious. The Assistant or the subconscious part of your brain, likes system.
It likes to make habits and get things done, but it's a little bit immature—kind of like a teenager. This part of your brain wants to make goals or habits that give you more pleasure, avoid pain, and get you more efficient (or in other words lazy.)
So we need to keep that into account when you're making your habit changes—especially changes to your health and weight loss habits. You want to move the hard work of health change and weight loss from the thinking part of our brain, the willpower part of our brain, to the subconscious part of your brain.
And this can be a little tricky, because that part of our brain wants pleasure, wants to avoid pain, and it wants to be lazy.
So, I'm going to teach you the hacks and the tricks that will help you to retrain the brain. Because that's the key to losing weight longterm without dieting. It’s moving all that hard work of dieting and health habit change to the habit part of your brain.
So throughout this program, I'm going to be talking a lot about the Boss and the Assistant and how to Retrain The Assistant.
She's had her own way for a long time. She kind of like a rogue secret agent who's been doing whatever she wants because we didn’t even know she was there and we weren’t aware of what she's doing.
Now we're going to shine the light on her (by collecting data and monitoring) and we're going to find out what she's been up to.
